A good, black sweater is always a woman's wardrobe staple, while men often have a favourite black jumper that seems to be worn continuously, regardless of the occasion, until its ragged appearance tells you it needs replacing!
It was when this latter situation arose that my husband Simon found that the task of finding an appropriate replacement was both difficult and time consuming. The choice in town centre shops ranged from non-existent to cheap poor quality, whereas in the larger city stores, the availability of good quality garments tended to be limited to extremely expensive designer brands, often over styled and not at all what he was looking for.
The on-line shopping option also found him frustrated, with the number of times black seemed to be either out of stock, or in the case of certain quality products, not even available, due to "Sales" only offering deals on the poorer selling sizes, styles and colours from last winter (black never appearing to be part of such a "clearance"). On checking whether this was also the case for women's knitwear, I was surprised to find a similar lack of availability during large parts of the year.
There was obviously a specific market need, and with my 25 years in the women's fashion industry (much of that time working with knitwear), and Simon's ideal of a quick, simple and unconfused shopping experience, the concept of The Black Sweater Company was born.
